On July 11, 1987, the world recognised Five Billion Day — the approximate date the global population would reach five billion. Interest in that milestone led the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme to institute World Population Day two years later, on July 11, 1989.
World Population Day has been held every year since, on July 11, with the purpose of drawing attention to global population issues. For families thinking about care at home, the most relevant of those issues is a simple one: more of us are living longer, and the planning that supports a longer life works best when it starts early.
